Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from my first therapy session?

Most people tell me that they feel nervous coming to their first session.  This is absolutely normal since it's a new experience!  Knowing what to expect might help to calm things down.

When you book your appointment you will be asked to be at your first session at least 15-20 minutes early.  The purpose is for you to complete the administrative documents. Once that is out of the way I will invite you into my office.

After basic introductions I will provide you with a consent form which you will read through and complete by signing. The consent form will tell you about the conditions of our therapeutic relationship.  You are welcome to ask me questions about this and I will also check that you understand what you are signing for. Once that is out of the way we start the process of getting to know each other. I will share with you a bit about myself and ask you to share a bit about yourself.  I will then ask you to tell me about the reason you decided you wanted to enter therapy (why you've come/the problem). I might then ask you to complete an assessment or two, depending on the presenting concern.

By this time your first session will probably be completed and we will schedule your next session.

How long does each therapy session take?

Therapy sessions last 50 minutes. However if required more time can be allocated.

How often will we meet?

Sessions usually occur once a week.  If you really are not able

to do weekly sessions we can spread it out to two weeks.

How long will I need to attend therapy?

Research (Howard et al.,1986) says the number of sessions

needed is dependent on the type and severity of the client's problems. The number of sessions you will need therefore can

only be determined once I have a better idea of the "problem".

We will discuss this in our session.

How does payment for sessions work?

Payment can be done in two ways - cash and medical aid. Your chosen option will be discussed and agreed on at the time you make the appointment.

Cash payments have to be done 48hrs prior to our session. If you plan to pay cash our practice receptionist making your appointment will provide you with the necessary information to make this payment.

Medical aid payments are submitted directly to your medical aid. When you make your first appointment you will be asked to provide your medical aid details. This will allow our staff to advise you regarding the requirements of your medical aid.

What happens if I have to cancel my session?

Our practice has a strict 48 hour cancellation policy.  If you are unable to attend your session please notify us. If you miss an appointment and do not notify us you will be charged for the session.  If you are not able to give 48hr notice we will require some evidence of the reason such as a note from your Doctor.
